The Shock Of The Fall Essay

As part of my studies for my EPQ I began to research independently into schizophrenia and mental health issues which I had. I chose to study a novel ‘The Shock of the fall’ in which the protagonist suffers from schizophrenia and the author is a Mental Health Nurse. I was intrigued to read about the thought process and when researched into the neuro pathways of a schizophrenic which had enlightened me to the challenging effects of the illness. Furthermore, whilst studying English Literature I was engrossed by the concept of the Oedipus complex, whilst reading the novel ‘Room’, using this as the centre of my coursework I researched into the more elaborate beliefs of Freud’s theories involving both the physiological and psychological developments …show more content…
I have participated in numerous extra-curricular activities such as Life Mentors and have achieved my British Sign Language Level 1. During my year of being a life mentor, I was assigned multiple students in which I had to engage with on a weekly basis to explore challenges and difficulties they faced in school and their home life. When interacting with different students I sharpened my perception into differential psychology and allowed me to draw upon my knowledge of Psychology to help give the best advice. This experience as well as sign language had benefited me in a positive way as it has strengthened my confidence, my ability to listen, communicate effectively and form positive and trusting relationships which supported my motivation to follow my desire to study psychology at a degree level. Not only have I participated in these activities, I also engaged in the National Citizen Service, this is a volunteer programme that is spread across a four weeks and consisted of organising, arranging charity events and raising awareness for local charity organisations, this experience enabled me to engage with a wide amount of the public and have the ability to communicate
