The song’s sad lyrics puts emphasis on the effects of being separated from the family among the tragedy that is occurring. What’s even more astounding is he is able to protect his innocence throughout the entire film. The reality of the situation is unimaginable to an adult and let alone a child. Guido risks his life in order to ensure his son’s survival. Just as Guido protects his son, Rosa keeps Magda nestled against her in her shawl protected from the world around them. As stated in Ozick’s “The Shawl”, “Rosa knew Magda was going to die very soon; she should have been dead already, but she had buried her deep inside the magic shawl, mistaken there for the shivering bound of Rosa’s breasts; Rosa clung to the shawl as if it covered only herself” (Ozick).
