New building, New Name
The Shard, formerly referred to as the London Bridge Tower, is a 95-storey skyscraper in Southward, London. The Shard is currently the 87th tallest building in the world, the second tallest building in the United Kingdom, and the fourth tallest building in Europe. The structure became known as The Shard, after negative criticism that stated that the building is "a shard of glass through the heart of historic London".
The Shard was designed in the year 2000 by the Italian Pritzker Prize winner architect Renzo Piano, whose work also includes the Parliament House in Malta and the Musée d'art contemporain in France. The Shard is said to have been inspired by numerous sites like the famous Venetian painter Canaletto’s London spires, as well as the church spires across London. …show more content…
