The Shack Movie Analysis

A key theme pertaining to the movie was the idea of motivation. Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting, behavior, a doing something in a particular way. It is the internal state that arouses one to action, pushes one in certain directions, and keeps one engages in specific activities. In the beginning of the movie, when Mr. Schneebly decides to start a band the students are apprehensive and hesitant to give up their original habits and philosophies about school. As a result, the teacher needs to find a way to motivate the students to participate and engage wholeheartedly. Mr. Schneebly uses extrinsic motivation, an environmentally created reason to engage in an action or activity, to get the students excited. Intrinsic Motivation is the inherent desire to engage one’s interests and to express and develop one’s capacities. At the end of the movie, once the cover has been blown, and the teacher sacked, the kids no longer need a reward. They genuinely like performing and making music. Thus, as they sneak out of school and perform in the battle of the bands. they prove they have intrinsic motivation because they want to continue to play music, and develop their own musical capabilities. One way to achieve these high levels of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is through goals. In the School of Rock the students most predominantly have performance goals. The students want to display competency and receive approval. The students are constantly trying to prove that they are the best.
