Sexualization of Younger Girls
Let me ask you a question. Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought something negative about yourself? That should not be the case but there are many others struggling with the same thing; because of the sexualization of young girls and women in the media. The sexualization of younger girls’ even women has been going on for as long as I can remember. It’s all over the media. Did you know that eighty percent of 10-year old girls in the U.S. report that they have been on a diet? Also that the number one wish for girls ages 11-17 is to be thinner? This is because of the media. Girls are constantly seeing people on television or in magazines trying to lose weight. The media is showing young females to not be comfortable in their own bodies. None of this is good for a young woman. The over-sexualization of young women has frightening consequences for health development, such as eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression. These are three of the most common problems in young girls and women. On www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/social_issues-july-dec13-sexualization_12-21/ it states that in 2011 a photo of French models we’re covered in jewels and their faces flush with rouge. The models were only as young as 10 years old. Now, ask yourself. How is this in any way going to help younger girls? It’s not going to; it’s going to bring them down.
