The Sexualization Of Women In The Film

Decent Essays
As the film goes on, a person will see the sexualization of women at play. In the scene with Tony and friends, watching Jess’s team play, the guys have a discussion that objectified the women who were playing soccer. For example: Guy one: “Get a hold of the these lots of titties.” Guy two: “Check out the boobs on the captain.” Guy one: “She lucky she haven’t knocked herself out, running up and down the pits with them.” All guys: *Laughs*
In this example, the men sexually objectify the women, especially the captain, because they “made the situation into a thing for others’ sexual use, rather than see the women as people with the capacity for independent action and decision making” (242). If these guys were to just notice the woman's body

Some of the prevalent topics that the book delves into are rape, exploitation, and prostitution. Early on, the characters are placed in the setting of a frat party, where the central theme of the party is related to the disrespect of women and their sexual status. Upon entering the party, Larashawndria says that the guys want them to “take pictures: you know, take our tops off, ‘Girls Gone Wild’ style” (Hutcheon 130). This displays the blatant disrespect from the football players because they are purely focused on seeing the girls as sexual objects, which understandably could offend people. They then proceed to offer the girls alcohol, to push the situation of them being vulnerable even further because if they were drunk, they would be easier to take advantage of and rape.…

Broyde then goes on to explain that in many religions, including his own, using the bathroom is seen as an extreme private time and shouldn’t be shared with anyone regardless of gender. The movie takes off from there with Vivian, played by Julia Roberts which is a prostitute, jumping into the expensive car Edward is driving and then showing him how to get to the exact location of where he wants to go. After the initial chance meeting, Edward offers Vivian a sum of three thousand dollars to spend the weekend with him.…

The film I chose for my final research paper was Paris is Burning, because although we viewed 2 other films about gender roles, I believe it represented all of the gender roles found in society. Livingston was able to dive into the world of the New York City drag balls and give the viewers an insight to race, class, gender, and sexuality in America. She was able to depict this by conducting interviews with “legends” in the ball scene but also footage of ball competitions and the interaction of gay and transgender people in normal society. My thesis revolves around how Livingston showed that gender is a role performed by society not a reality. One of the main topics that represents the performance that is gender is the different categories in the balls.…

The article, ‘Film Bodies: Gender, Genre & Excess’1 by Linda Williams explores whether the forms of sex, violence and emotion found in the genres of pornography, horror, and melodrama (specifically the woman’s weepie) respectively, are as gratuitous as my film scholars and critics believe them to be. Setting out to disprove this idea, Williams’ investigates and compares the form, function, and system of the three genres. Ultimately, William’s central claims reveal the value in the supposed excess of these three genres that benefit a spectator in a variety of ways. Seeking to argue her idea, Williams’ firstly uncovers why elements of these genres are regularly deemed as excessive. This is presented with the contrast of Classic Hollywood and…
