The question is, would you forgive? Imagine it’s your family member who didn’t come home from one day, you’re sitting there waiting for them to walk in that door whether it’s your mother, father, brother, or sister but they just never return. Imagine that it was your fault that they didn’t come home. If knowing it was my fault in a way, I would forgive. In the short story “The Seventh Man” by Haruki Murakami, there are two young boys who are best friends, inseparable, always together doing everything. They felt like brothers. They even lived right next to each other, One that goes by the name of K who was younger than the other, K is a small frail boy who was a little slower than everyone else but boy if you gave him a pen or a pencil he would make enchanting things, as if a professional had done it! “I told myself to run over to K,. Get out of there. It was the only thing to do. I knew that the wave was coming and K didn’t.” (Murakami pg. 138). After a few seconds The Seventh Man found himself running the opposite way he had got to the sand and yelled at K one last time and he had heard him! But, it was too late, a huge wave came and swooped him up as he tried to run away but he was no match. K was nowhere to be found or his dog, and all The Seventh man could do was think to himself why he didn’t save him. Another wave hit and he just stood there watching, ready to be taken like K the wave stopped and just lost all power, when he was looking up at the wave he had saw K on top smiling a huge smile that was ear to ear, he was no longer K. In the short story The Twenty-Seventh Man, Nathan Englander illustrates how people’s fear about death and the future will gradually turn into acceptance, entwining the lives of those on death row. Through the four writers Pinchas, Zunser, Bretzky, and Korinsky, the author describes their madness as they are trapped in jail, awaiting their execution, and unable to bond with each other. However, by the end of the story, the four men are more accepting of their death and each other, acknowledging their commonalities and becoming no longer afraid. These four criminals of Russia already are displayed with unresolved weaknesses; Zunser “trying to adapt to change”, Bretzky “hadn’t really awakened”, Korinsky that “worr[ied] about… his wife”, and Pinchas, without his own worries, worries about “the others’ breathing, making sure they were alive” (Englander 10). These worries from each person contributes to their personality and acting towards each other, while Pinchas will become the one to help bring them together, along with Zunser’s adaptability.…

Who would forgive the person who killed your beloved family member? I wouldn’t do that, but I recently read an article about a 59 year old woman in Minnesota who forgave her son’s killer, Oshea Israel. After that, the woman even invited the killer to live next door as a neighbor. My real life example of mercy is when the woman in the story forgave her son’s killer. This story teaches us that we need forgiveness today because if we fail to forgive, people will have wars and arguments everyday with different people.…

The possibility of forgiveness depends on the people involved and the situation. Some people believe in the common saying “forgive and forget” and live up to it, but others never forgive people for their wrong-doings and definitely don’t forget. In the book Sunflower, the main character, Simon, was not able to forgive the SS officer for his participation in the torturing of the Jews during the Holocaust. This is understandable considering that the Simon was an imprisoned Jew himself. It would have been possible to forgive the dying man, but it was unlikely for the Jew to do so, and he didn’t.…

In some instances such as physical abuse and molestation of infants and young children forgiveness may seem unattainable, but it is always possible. The next story I am going to tell you about is of an abusive relationship between a father, Patrick, and his daughter, Maeve. When Maeve was nine, her father “came into the bathroom when she was showering and had her perform oral sex on him” (72). He convinced her that it was just their “special time” (72) seeing as she wouldn’t know at that age that he was doing something heinous and…

It would require a great deal of practice and patience, but I believe I could accomplish the state of mind and emotion referred to as "radical forgiveness". For many years I responded to situations as a victim, believing I wasn't good enough or blaming others for my choices. As an adult, I try to assume responsibility but old habits die hard and it is a struggle at times to push the victim away. When I consciously choose to not be a victim it is empowering.…

Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Forgiveness Intrapersonal forgiveness allows forgiveness without ever having to communicate with the other person. This forgiveness is about self, not the other person who did the harm. Cornish et al. suggests responsibility, remorse, restoration, and renewal is the four component therapeutic model to self forgiveness. First the individual accepts responsibility for what has occurred, limiting blame on others.…

In the short story “The Seventh Man” Haruki Murakami, uses a horrific typhoon to overcome a childhood tragedy about the seventh man and his friend K. Haruki Murakarni uses one man’s recurring fear of a childhood tragedy to shape and form his character through a terrifying wave that swallows his friend. The author uses imagery, foreboding, and symbolism in this story to construct a sense of fear and bring a wave to life. At the beginning of the story, the author uses imagery to give the surroundings of the main character on a dark, weary night and to set the scene for the story, “‘It was the biggest wave I had ever seen in my life,’ he said. ‘A strange wave. An absolute giant’”(Maurakami 7-8).…

You should always remember forgiving does not mean forgetting, it means letting go of the hurt. A wound is never going to heal if you keep touching it, this means to let go of what has been bothering you and instead of holding a grudge, take that time and spend it on treating yourself, you deserve that peace. This is just one of the many examples of how not forgiving can hurt you a lot more than you think. Forgiveness will set you free. Forgiveness is for the strong, it shows how much strength you have, and how you managed to pull through a hard time.…
