The Service Setting Appeal: Bellevue College

The Service Setting Appeal

I attended a class held in a lecture hall at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington where I earned my associate’s degree. The area of study for the class was history and it was held in the only lecture hall on the campus, the Paccar Conference and Lecture Hall. The institution was very proud of the hall and along with holding lectures, would rent it out to local businesses and associations for use.
I remember the environment of the hall and my learning experience very well because the professor made a point to tell the class about the hall’s acoustic design and the overall service setting and that is a memory that is always stuck with me. Some elements of the hall had been designed by somebody famous in the

For example, it was brighter in the front around the lectern where the professor lectured. This made it easier to focus on watching and listening to him. The lights that shone over the seating area where the students sat were soft and dimmer than the front, and were directed to shine on the tables to allow for easy visibility of one’s things. I liked the lighting design because it kept the focus on the front of the room and reduced the distractions from around the seating area, which is in the shape of a half-circle around the lectern. Had the lighting been the usual bright florescent lights used in many of the classrooms on campus I believe that it would have not been as easy to ignore any peripheral …show more content…
One of these elements were the interior colors chosen for the walls and décor. They were mostly browns and other neutral tones that made it feel drab and boring inside. However, this may have been a tactic to keep all eyes up front.
Another element I didn’t enjoy were the regular distractions from other students or faculty members entering the hall during class. The lecture hall was apparently in high demand because we were often interrupted by uninvited guests that came to use or see it, and ignored the signs outside the room that said ‘Class in progress, do not disturb.’
Lastly, I was never comfortable with the size of the lecture hall. It sat approximately 150 people and had standing room for more, but this was a small community college at the time that had an average class size of 20-30 students. This made the room seem to be too big for one class and it felt very empty inside. Had the class sizes been bigger I believe that the room would have felt more

Disappointments Since I started the ACCG950 course, there are not many disappointed points. I would say that my disappointment relates to the location of our classroom and the attendant of students. Firstly, I acknowledge that the classroom was changed because the room is too small for all students. With your concerns, the new room is big enough for all students; however, the number of students attending the lecture has been low.…

I am currently enjoying my senior year here at California High School. Although I consider many of my classes to be easy here, the weight of all of this year's homework is already being felt. It is my firm belief that for the sake of our students, a study hall is needed. More than 70% of students in our school are involved in extracurricular activities. I am currently involved in Boy Scouts, band, drumline, youth group, spanish club, math team, academic team, FBLA and also have a part-time job as a bagboy at Cal’s Thriftway to provide the money to save up for college and drive to school to go to all of the club meetings and practices.…

A serious problem on the U of A campus is the growing number of returning students wanting to continue living on campus. This issue is causing some freshman students to fall under the category of Overflow Students and forcing them to live in study rooms, with RA’s and some even in hotels near by. One of the only solutions to accommodate for the increasing number of on-campus residents is to build another residence hall. One of the main reasons returning students choose to stay on campus is the convenience that campus housing offers. The ease of being able to “wake up, roll out of bed and go to class without having to get in their car and drive over here and mess with finding a place to park” caused over 5,500 students to want to live on campus this year (Smith).…

I have chosen a place where its located inside Parks Library due to its valuable position in my heart. When I saw that I had to write a letter describing a place which I like in campus, a hall in Parks Library instantly came into my mind. Basically, this place reminds of everything I like in terms of architecture, its quite zone, and fancy murals. I have shared a glimpse of my memory to my friend through writing a letter directly speaking to her in words. Reminiscing the old days where she and I loved talking about architecture and interior design by deeply describing the hall’s surroundings and atmosphere.…

I have enjoyed reading, The Facility Management Handbook and Building Type Basics for College and University Facilities. These are two books that have made me have a better appreciation and respect for the work that goes into facility management and how campuses lay out strategic campus plans to ensure that costs are contained, but to also ensure that campuses look great to attract students, but to also remember that there are infrastructures that need to be in place to also preserve the campuses, but also modernized them based on the goals and mission of a university. I agree that a well-functioning campus is the result of a careful planned and keen managed plan (Neuman, 2013). It is very important for campus administrators to realize…
