In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

When I think of community, I think of something much more relevant to me as a teenager. I think about my school and the sense of community we have at Long Reach. The longer I’ve been there the more this sense of community and togetherness has grown on me, even through challenging times that faced us all. This anger is not misplaced, it’s 2016 and we still have to deal with homages to minstrel shows of the 19th and 20th centuries?…

Make a Change in The Community One of my community’s biggest issues is the violence and crime among teenagers. The teenagers act as though they do not know how to respect one another’s opinions, or work together peacefully. It has been said that tough love and punishment will help reduce our youth’s behavior, but I disagree. There is proof that if we open programs and give troubled children personal therapy their behavior changes.…
