As I was reading The Servant, by James C. Hunter, I felt a sense of accomplishment by being able to recognize some concepts and theories I learned in my Business Management class. Some of these concepts and theories include: servant leadership (pgs.64,65,77,85), power vs. authority (pgs.80, 85), theory X and theory Y (pg.72,73), Maslow´s hierarchy of needs (pg.68-70), and the Hawthorne effect (pgs.103-105).

Nevertheless, Simeon explained to John how people like Greg are actually needed when taking decisions. In page 72 Simeon shares how his first mentor in business taught him to have this defiant contradicting attitude when he was the vice president at a sheet metal manufacturing company. Greg described how he was a theory Y type of person, meaning a “hands-and have-fun-kind of leader, more of like a “kumbaya”. He then contrasted the theory X type of people, which in his case were two other vice presidents called Jay and Kenny. These two men were lazy, dishonest, and lacked initiative in work. Because of these personality traits, they showed a theory X type of personality.
In addition, Simeon discussed how Kenny and Jay, because of their theory X kind of thinking, had a very square minded and dinosaur way of thinking, which would eventually lead toc the company´s failure. Conversely, Simeon explained how he and his theory Y personality would´ve given away the company. Bill, who was the president had to set boundaries between these two ways of thinking. At the end of the day, they all needed each other to balance the opinions. The advantage of having these theories differences was that decisions ended as a compromise due to this reciprocity from the three

Through the lives of John Daily and five other struggling leaders on a retreat, Hunter uses Brother Simeon to explain the principles of servant leadership, which causes John and the others to reflect deeply on their character, trust, and commitment. Using the Servant Leadership Theory does have its downsides, unfortunately. One issue is that other leaders utilizing other leadership techniques could see the Servant Leadership methods as weak. One of the biggest issues with Servant Leadership Theory is that the leader is constantly sharing things as opposed to keeping thigs like information and power to themselves (Daft, 2014). This leadership style could make other leaders underestimate the power that a leader using the Servant Leadership Theory maintains. I know particularly in the Office of the District Attorney where I currently work, other departments are predominantly male-run, by men who have no qualms giving orders.…

Leo did menial tasks but also kept the group in high spirts with song, until one day Leo disappeared and the group fall apart and the journey is abandoned. For Greenleaf, this tale told that a great leader is seen as a servant first. Leo was indeed the leader all along, however he was servant to his followers first.…
