The Serious Heroin Problem in Camden County, New Jersey
First, heroin abuse has significantly increased in the past decade in New Jersey, and the rate is still rising these years. Stephen Stirling published a drug abuse summary on NJ.com which states that “At least 781 people died of heroin-related overdoses in New Jersey in 2014, marking the fourth straight year the total has increased” (Stirling, “Herointown, N.J.”). Second, the heroin death-rate in Camden County per 100,000 is 20.3%, not only exceeds that in New Jersey, which is 8.3%, but is almost ten times than the national average which is 2.6% (Stirling, “Herointown, N.J.”).

It is an effective, low-cost and low-risk method of education which is extremely attractive to student population. Game-based learning should complement to most education programs since it is “a more engaging and motivating alternative to traditional learning environment” (Denham, Mayben, and Boman 70). The games in this learning method leads learners to participate and engage more in assigned learning materials than a traditional learning program does. When facing a problem in the game-based learning environment, participants are encouraged to make a decision by themselves to solve the problem according to their knowledge and common sense. The game can simulate different situation and problems based on their decisions. Due to various combination of situations, game-based learning is more attractive to participants than other traditional program is. In addition, this kind of program is risk-free, since all of the situations and problems are simulated by computer software. After intensely engaging in learning and practicing problem-solving process, learners are able to easily transform from simulated situations to real life. When facing similar problems in real life, learners can also solve them easily and calmly according to their experience in the simulated environment. The targets of this program are adolescents. This program tries to prevent them from illegal use and abuse use of ATOD. It has been a great success since “It’s Up 2U” was created. A study shows that among 522 seventh grade students, there has been an approximately 38% decrease in ATOD abuse in the sample teenagers. And 43.7% of the participants have decreased their misperceptions of ATOD (Schweizer, Hayslett, Bansal, Ronco, and Schafer
