Greasing the Sepoys’ cartridges with beef and pork fat revealed many different things about the British attitude towards the Indians. One of the main causes for the Sepoy Mutiny was the fact that the Indian, Hindus, and Muslims were all sick and tired of being treated badly and how their economic problems kept increasing. But when one rumor started, things started taking a heavier drive. Towards rebellion. In 1857, gossip spread around the Sepoys. This rumor was saying that the Indian soldiers, that the cartridges of their new Enfield rifles were greased with beef and pork fat.
