One of my biggest interests when I entered John Jay College was to know how a society operates. To me, it was crucial to understand how family, education, religion, the economy and government, the fundamental institutions of society shape our lives. Through sociology classes, I gained a deeper understanding as to how the family as a social institution plays an essential role in making a society possible. Critical functions that promote social stability like socialization, emotional support, social identity and other factors needed to flourish in a society, are mainly found in the family unit. I am conscious that it is very difficult for one person to bring about a social change to a society. However, by coming together with others, change becomes easier to accomplish. This unity is exactly what social workers are calling for. It has been empirically shown that social workers are not only motivated to “cure” poverty, but that they are effectively using their profession to provide services, resources and a voice to those that have been forgotten by the powerful. By becoming a social worker, I will use my voice to give back to the society that turned me into the humble, optimistic and determined person I am
