Americans teach empathy from a very young age in the form of “sharing”. When I relive my past, I was in kindergarten before transferring to Taiwan, I remember my teacher lecturing me, “Jasper, be nice and share your toy please. How would you feel if you were in Jeremy’s shoes?” Even though, at that moment in time I was unable to grasp the logic as to why I should be sharing, however overtime such habits develops into an appealing character trait. However, my progress was hindered by the change in my habitat. When I arrived at Taiwan, I was trained to be respectful to elders and other people with better or equal social classes as me. This did not include the people on the streets as they were considered subpar. When I flew back to America, I had a huge dispute with my uncle as to why people were on the streets. His claim was,”They do not have a choice, some started with nothing and ended with nothing.
