In “My Wood” Forster says that he realizes just how badly the possession of land affects him. Despite being able to see that it's wrong, he will not do anything to change; he feels as though he is too far gone to change. This is shocking to the reader because most people would assume that once you have realized the error of your ways it is an easy fix. You have to wonder what kind of hold the inanimate object know as my wood has on Forster. Why does he need so much land and what causes these desires? Forester was just a simple man who had never had as much as he now does. conversely, with this new land, his morals are easily changed and lost. In “The Veldt” the shock factor comes from the idea that the children are with executing their own parents so they could continue to play in the nursery. It is interesting to see how staring out with nothing and gaining a new possession contrary to always having the possession affects the ones thought process.
