An excellent display of the emotions from the artists depicted upon the canvas tells a story to the viewers. Courbet uses a realistic style, life like, kind of like he is looking into a camera or directly at the viewer. Approach in creating his oil paintings. Van Gogh was notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color he used in his paintings. He also was known for using watercolors and was able to work quickly with them to produce more impressive works.
The two oil paintings that I selected as Art Appreciation are different in subject matter. Courbet shows desperate emotions in the painting "The Desperate Man". He draws the viewers into the scene and leave them wondering what is happening and if there is anything they can do to save him from something unexpected and dangerous. Whereas Van Gogh expresses divine love, compassion in his final self-portrait painting as a gift to his mom. He chooses to paint himself with a younger appearance than he actually is by shaving off his mustache and beard, short haircut, non-gray hair and using feminine
