The Self-Determination Theory: My Need For Contritivation

Improved Essays
I believe that my need for competence is motivating me to achieve this goal. According to the self-determination theory, competence is one of the innate psychological needs that are the basis for self-motivation and personality integration (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Thus, I am motivated to achieve this goal because I want to develop my skills at public speaking and be more competent at it. Not only that, achieving this goal will also help me achieve esteem needs. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, esteem needs involve the respect of self and the respect of others (Maslow, 1970). These needs involve achievement, adequacy, mastery, competence, along with the recognition of others (Maslow, 1970). Since one of the reasons I want to achieve this …show more content…
The first proximal goal is to intern or volunteer at a mental health center or clinic. I believe that interning or volunteering would be a great experience for me to gain some knowledge about the counseling progress and develop a better understanding about the field. It would also benefit me in the future as having experiences working with people would make me a strong candidate when applying for graduate school. An important step I have taken was searching for possible volunteering places that matches with my needs and interest. The next practical measure is to apply for a volunteering or intern position at these places. The next optimal goal is to attend graduate school and receive a Masters in Counseling. Some practical measures that I would need to take include searching for the graduate schools with programs that fit my interest and study and sit for the GRE. When I do attend graduate school, I would work hard and gain the experience needed through clinical placement. After graduating from graduate school, my next proximal goal is to obtain the license. To do so, I would need to work 3000 hours of clinical experience before applying and sit for the exam

The two upper division courses in my major are PSY 3100- Developmental Psychology and PSY 4370- Introduction to Clinical and Counseling Psychology. These courses will be useful in this field since “PSY 3100 provides an overview of the empirical evidence regarding physical, cognitive, social and emotional changes that occur from conception to death and PSY 4370 introduces students to major perspectives and practices in contemporary clinical and counseling psychology (APSU Undergraduate Bulletin).” According to What Can I Do With This Major?, a few high impact strategies they suggest are: part job or summer jobs as a camp counselor or a tutor, complete an internship for academic credit, volunteer with organizations such as a crisis hotline, Big Brother Big Sister, Special Olympics, etc.. I have already signed up to volunteer at Big Brother Big Sister, just waiting for them to contact me back, and I have worked at a hotline for troubled teens. I would love to acquire a summer job as a camp counselor and complete an internship.…

Self-Determination Theory "Self-Determination theory (SDT) is an approach to human motivation and personality that uses traditional empirical methods while employing an organismic metatheory that highlights the importance of humans’ evolved inner resources for personality development and behavioral self-regulation"(Ryan & Deci, 2000, p. 68). Within this paper onee will discuss the correlation between SDT and motivation in relations to personal individual growth, and professional development. Determining Motivation "Self-determination theory suggests that there are different types of motivation, such that people vary not only in level of motivation but also in the source or quality of that motivation. At the same time, SDT postulates a continuum of autonomy to order those types of motivation" (Chemolli & Gagne, 2014, p. 575). Motivation is derived from the desire of the nature at hand; the interest of the specified subject, will determine the depth of the motivation.…
