It can take years to correct public perception, and as the Hillsborough Disaster of 1989 shows us, the consequences for groups of people can be disastrous. In the case of Hillsborough, the misinformation came directly from the police, and was reiterated by authority figures in both the political and soccer worlds. This paper will examine how this “truth” came about, and how what was recorded as truth was a direct result not of the events that happened, but rather by what those in power wished to convey. Additionally, it will contrast how those in power so…
There is a member of the women’s soccer team that has an undiagnosed exercised induced disease. She has been to a vast amount of doctors and the only thing they have been able to do is to rule out seizures. Although, seizures may have been rules out she still presents with very seizure-like symptoms when it happens. She starts by losing cognitive function and no one is able to get her to respond to his or her attempts at getting her attention. She also has a tendency during this stage to start hitting her legs, in the belief that this somehow will help or just a twitch that comes with the episode.…
Tom Brady, a prominent quarterback for the New England Patriots, is one of the National Football League’s (NFL) greatest quarterbacks to have ever played. He excelled in both Football and Baseball, and gave up the opportunity to play professional baseball and attended the University of Michigan instead. Tom Brady led his team to an Orange Bowl victory and set himself up to be selected in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft. A year later, after the starting quarterback for the Patriots was injured, Tom Brady stepped up to win 11 of the 14 games he played, and secured a win in the Super Bowl XXXVI and was later named Most Valuable Player.…

The Florida Star v. B.J.F. established important answers regarding when it is acceptable for newspapers to publish sensitive information. Even today, law enforcement agencies and courts have struggled balancing victim’s rights and reporter’s rights. In some cases, courts have gone to extensive lengths to protect victims throughout a trial (Babcock and Freivogel, 2015.)…

Thoughout history there have always been scandals. In The Histories, Herodotus was a fan of discussing the scandal in Persia with two impostor kings, which when exposed led to Darius assuming the throne, or the scandal in Delphi when the high priestess was bribed to make fake oracles that resulted in Sparta attacking Athens. Nowadays we hear about scandals quite frequently, usually to do with a minister of Parliament misusing public funds, or a celebrity saying something controversial. The statement presented claims that scandals help focus our attention on important issues, and are more effective than persuasive speakers and orators.…
Fifteen years ago on February 18, Dale Earnhardt -- a widely loved and respected professional driver for NASCAR -- was killed in an accident at the Daytona International Speedway. This event incited a legal battle in the state of Florida between Earnhardt’s family, local lawmakers, and journalists from the Orlando Sentinel that lasted for years over the rights that journalists have in accessing sensitive information in order to do their work. Considering the ethical codes respected by journalists, the broader application of ethics theories, and the specific actions of the parties involved, the Sentinel not only had a duty in obtaining the autopsy photos in order to verify NASCAR’s conclusion, but a moral obligation to do so for the public.…
CTE Crisis Today, people begin to question sports regulations due to a massive discovery of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis being found in the majority of athletes. However, this has been a national crisis we all have been blinded to for years. Changing the regulations of the game for the greater good is necessary and needs to happen quickly.…

Everyday people view articles and stories that are produced by the media. Just one event can create hundreds of different stories explaining the event. Each type of media and each company produces a different story. It is so hard to distinguish which articles are telling the truth and which ones aren’t. The hardest articles to see the truth in are ones involving politics or large scale world issues.…
In the article, “When all news is ‘fake’, whom do we trust?” the author Ruth Marcus writes from an interesting point of view about the media. Her article provides no biasness and only gives facts about the media and the society at large. She leaves the begging question as to whether the media should or should not be trusted by the society to the reader of the article. She provides facts to support her article, the technique of the author’s delivery is established as formal.…
If you ever had a conversation with someone and they ask you who you are 90 seconds from when you introduced yourself, you might be dealing with a person who has had a traumatic brain injury. My father, aka 10 second George, suffered a brain injury four years ago after surviving a motorcycle accident. A TBI is known as is a nondegenerative, noncongenital insult to the brain from an external mechanical force, possibly leading to permanent or temporary impairment of cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functions, with an associated diminished or altered state of consciousness. It wasn’t the accident that caused my dad’s TBI (traumatic brain injury).…
Professional sports is not too risky for anybody. Professional sports can be fun and interesting to play or watch. One reason that it's not too risky is that they are trying to produce better protective gear such as NFL; they are trying to make better football gear for it's players. With new safety and protective gear you can count on, there is no reason to be worried. Also if there is more research being done on brain injuries, there could also be a chance there would be less injuries or accidents during games; and that's what NFL is doing too.…
