In order to analyze why there is still the segregation of women in the workplace it is important to understand what segregation means. In an article by Barbara Reskin (1993), she notes that segregation used to be seen as the separation of races. However, it is more than a physical separation. It is a “fundamental process in social inequality” (p. 241), that facilitates the unequal treatment of different groups and often ignorance of their contributions. In the case of the workplace today, there is a clear inequality between men and women in earnings, occupational jobs and the distribution of positions. Philip Cohen, in The Persistance of Workplace Gender Segregation in the US (2013), states that the forces that lead to such inequality include “culturally defined choices by …show more content…
As it notes in The Double Ghetto, “the labour force is divided into women’s work and men’s work” (Armstrong, P., Armstrong, H., 2010). Women are often found in jobs such as nursing, sales cashiers and waitressing. According to gender stereotypes in the workplace, the norm holds that women are expressive and warm, but incompetent and incapable of conducting serious business compared to men. They are thought to be less competent. Due to this, women are often prejudged by their assumed lack of managerial skills and other assets they may bring are often discounted (Larwood, L., Wood, M. M., & Inderlied, S. D., 1978).
