There are several practices that allow a student to be more successful in college. Every individual is different and there will be variations in study technique, but one of the most vital ways a student can be successful is to put in the time. Time ties into many successful practices such as putting in the time to study, not procrastinating, and allotting certain time every day to dedicate to school work. Many professors present a recommendation of how many hours of study time should be put in for every hour of class time. A successful student will take that recommendation and use it to their advantage. In the article “The Secret to College Success: What Smart Kids Do,” the author explains that the study habits of good students involve just studying. Do not keep due dates just floating around in the brain; write them down in a planner so nothing gets mixed up and it can be referenced and provide a to-do list. Printing off the syllabus and writing down all future assignments in a planner will ensure that nothing comes as a surprise and it allows the student to be prepared (Cohan). Reading the syllabus will also inform students on the way the professor wants things done so they can organize their assignments accordingly. Additionally, if they have any questions, the syllabus provides the professor’s contact information and the times they can reach their professor. One way to garner as many points as possible on an assignment is to make a list of every requirement the assignment needs. This guarantees that nothing will be forgotten and gives the student specific points to look at when revising and proofreading.
