The Secret Science Alliance and the Copycat Crook is a beautiful graphic novel created, written, and drawn by Eleanor Davis (inked by Drew Weing, colored by Joey Weiser and Michele Chidester, and lettered by Bryant Paul Johnson). This beautifully crafted novel tells the story of three “unlikely friends” coming together and forming strong friendships through their shared passion for science and inventing! The main character, Julian Calendar, is an eleven year old in junior high. He loves science, inventing pranks, and the scientist Andro Kablovsky. In both The Amazing Spiderman and The Secret Science Alliance you see the nerdy teacher’s pet become the figure that saves the day in the end. In both stories you see the nerdy hero is tempted by revenge. Peter says “I’ll show them” and Julian uses his new alliance to create even better pranks (that he uses against his new schools main bully). But in the end they both struggle with finding their place in the world and they both have to handle responsibilities that are seemingly too complex for someone their age. Another similarity is the evil scientist figure. In both The Amazing Spiderman and The Secret Science Alliance you see a hero or friend of the protagonist reveal themselves to be the ‘bad guy.” In Spiderman, Norman Osborn becomes Dr. Octopus. In The Secret Science Alliance Julian looks up to Dr. Stringer at first, but then he turns out to be the enemy. They both share the common tropes of the nerd into hero and the friend into enemy that we’ve discussed in
