The Secret Of My Family

Improved Essays
Family stories and secrets pass down through generation to generation. Being third generation here in the United States, my father’s side lacked in that area except for how we got here. Rumors stated that my great-grandfather moved here with his family to flee from the mob in Italy. Slight curiosity growing up turned into an immensely intense urge to find out more. I kept asking questions in hopes of receiving answers, always being left unsatisfied with blank stares. After years of being left in the dark without any help I decided to act on my own. Finding out about my family was my number one priority. A secret to reveal to generation to come that proves the rumors true.
When I first began this mission I had absolutely no idea where to start.

The main point i kept finding insisted my family loved to hide their tracks. Looking back onto the dates my great aunts, great uncle, and great grandpa were born and when they came over here did not match up. I found that all four children were born in Ohio in the year 1906-1914, but they all came over here in 1930. That was not humanly possible. Digging further into the research i noticed my great-great grandfather had two different dates just months apart of when he arrived here in the U.S., once with family and the once by himself. While looking to see what they did after their arrival, it became apparent that my great grandfather, Stephan, had multiple jobs. My family was not poor, which did not add up since they were immigrants from Italy. His jobs ranged all over the place from owning a merchant business to carpentry, very uncommon for that era. I also found upon their arrival they completely changed the spelling of the original name. Now Boccia used to be spelled Boucia. Upon looking to see if the rumor remained the same or had some truth to it. The rumor itself said my great grandfather, Stephen, moved here with his wife and kids out of the blue. Many in the family believe it was an attempt to flee from the mob. I personally believe that they did run from the mob. The facts I have found support my belief. How could someone randomly leave their country, change the spelling of their last

My family has to be as odd as it gets. Some of my friends even compare to the Kardashian/Jenner family without the fame or money. So I guess my family starts with my mom and dad. My mom is an Irish American who has lived in Waltham for most of her life. My father actually came here when he about nineteen to escape his war-torn country, El Salvador.…

Like so many children I grew up hearing stories of the past from my grandparents, at the time little did I know how the events that occurred in a small brick building had greatly affected my life. The story starts with my grandparents in the early eighties. My grandfather, in his fifties, realized he wanted more for his family than what driving a Pepsi truck could provide while having a late midlife crisis. He was confident and determined he could do more with his life (a combination that would prove successful years later.) He promptly quit his job, much to my grandmother’s dismay, and took out a loan for the payment for a convenience store on the Mantachie - Mooreville city line.…

Besides protecting me from my birth mother on my fifth birthday, he also protected me from them at other times as well. When I was two years old, my birth father came to the door with his new wife. He told my adoptive parents he wanted to try and make it work and since the adoption was not final yet they reluctantly let him take me. Less than a week later, my birth father called my adoptive parents in the middle of the night. He was in a drunken stupor, yelling and screaming that he could not take care of me and said someone should come get me before he killed me.…

It was just something that I had seen on TV or read in a book, but deep down I knew the truth. Within those two months of knowing about his existence I had gone through the stages of denial and seemed to be stuck with anger. I very strongly disliked this new child, I couldn 't even look at my father when he called me the baby of the family, because I would hear my subconscious say not anymore and never again. I couldn 't see my father interact with children under the age of six, because I knew that he was picturing his son that he didn 't get to raise. Knowing that the decision to never interact with him would be easy.…

The only time I ever saw my dad was from the photograph my mom had given me. I would make up stories about my dad in school when my companions would tell the colossal things their dad had done. Returning home from school I would cry about the falsehoods I had told on the playground that at last none of it was ever genuine. Where it considers inside I felt however my father didn 't require me. When I was conceived my dad came in and took a gander at me and said how delightful I was, yet something changed when the pediatrician came in with the birth certificate.…

No matter how many times I tell myself that it was not my fault I could never believe it. I never had the guts to say no no matter how many times my mind yelled at me to say it. Sexual molestation is a subject I have lived with all my life and have fought through it on my own until my family eventually discovered the truth. The biggest fear that I had once people discovered what happened to me was the horrible things they would say about me. Being judged for something I really had no control of was a big factor as to why I never said anything.…

The questions about me, my siblings, and parents were fine. However some of the questions about my grandparents were a little more difficult to answer. Mainly because all of my grandparents are deceased, so we couldn’t ask them if my parents were unsure. However, I think that my parents both gave the correct information about their parents. Changes and constancy experienced over the past three generations: Looking at the patterns of places of residence throughout my family, it is clear that the younger the generation the more the individual moved.…

Meeting my Father The Memoir “All Over but the Shoutin’,” by Rick Bragg he tells us about his trip to his fathers house and how there was a flood of different emotions and realization because of it. This story really reminds me of times when my siblings and myself would go see my father when we were younger. It was kind of (emphasis on “kind of”) what Bragg was going through except my mother and father decided it would be in good interest for everyone if they just split up when I was much younger. Ok so it wasn 't much of a mutual split, my father decided that he wanted to be with another women, still he was out of our lives. After he left it was a really long time before he wanted anything to do with us again and by this time I had a lot…
