There was once a family of flies that lived in a vast meadow in Africa, with grass greener than any form of life you’ve seen. It was so huge, it seemed never ending. It was inhabited with all forms of life. Grasshoppers jumped with joy. The butterflies flapped with fascinating energy, and worms wriggled with excitement. All the families were kind and generous with others, sharing food. All but ONE…… The fly family was very selfish, eating all plants around them, so no one would get food. Eventually, the population of plants declined and there wasn’t enough food to go around. Other families were starving and dying, begging for food from that selfish group. I should be the one to have this thing for myself.’’ Off went bratty little sister fly. “Since I’m the cutest, I should have it.”’ Everyone else rolled their eyes. All the others yelled out why they should have it. They were all so tired because of arguing so they went to bed scornfully to continue the problem tomorrow. The next morning the fly family with broken light bulbs woke up early so they could sit on the leaves. When the did the action they were dying to do, the whimsical plant shut its leaves tight trapping all the family members. Only the youngest male and female fly escaped, just enough to save the species. All the species of the valley rejoiced when they knew the weed of all their problems was removed. Everyone got enough food for as long as they lived, but with the occasional disappearance of a fellow insect. Originally the plant was just meant to eat one problem family, but it's taste for meat just grew till it was strictly survived on eating insects. The Venus fly trap today goes around killing all the flies it could to keep the population down for the rest of the earth’s pleasure. Next time you see a carnivorous plant, salute it for keeping the population of those pesky problems

The verb “fly” and its association with birds express the feeling of extreme freedom and energy. Since the house is a motif for Homer’s and Langley’s memories, the hippies exiting the house like being freed suggests that the Collyer brothers are willing to let go of the world around them. Everything the Collyer brothers are attach to goes through the house, as well as the hippies. This implies that the brothers want to maintain a certain memory of the hippies or the world, but people migrate so it is not possible to conserve them. Doctorow describes the scene where the characters exit the house with a stunning imagery and a comparison to the birds.…
