Response Essay The two short stories I chose to compare and contrast are “The Secret Lion” by Alberto Alvaro Rios and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. While reading them, I realized that both short stories are very similar in a lot of certain ways. The two short stories have a strong example of symbolism included in the whole lecture, both short sorties were written in first person point of view, and both short stories have the same theme. Which is that certain changes in life, such as growing up and death are unavoidable. In “The Secret Lion” the author has a strong example of symbolism. Themes for “A Rose for Emily” could be the transition between change and tradition, the impact of death, and the unavoidable changes of life. Furthermore, “A Rose for Emily” has a strong example of symbolism as well. Emily’s house is the first symbolic object shown in the short story. At the beginning of the story the house is white, unblemished, and cleansed, just as Emily’s soul. At the end of the story the house becomes messy and stained, like Emily’s soul because of her loose of innocence as she grew older. A rose, as the title itself, can be also considered as a symbol, and in my opinion this is the most important one. The rose represents the love from Homer towards Emily. The author also wrote the story with a great use symbolism, imagery, sensory details, and allegories. An example of imagery could be “It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street” Faulkner used also numerous sensory details, an example of this could be “It smelled of dust and disuse—a close, dank smell...” Throughout the story, Faulkner used educated long and fancy words to give the story a little sense of mystery and detail.
