Ask yourself what has your mother done for you in your life. Lily's mother didn't teach her much while she was alive and causes her much anguish. But the life lessons Lily will learn as an effect of her mother's death will really shape her into who she is today. The abandonment that Lily felt causes her to look for a motherly figure in her life. The abandonment feeling in Lily causes her to feel a lot of anger towards her mother. Lily’s grows up without a mother and it really affects how she lives her everyday life it also brings her on this journey to figure out who Lily really is.
At a young age Lily’s mother dies because this Lily is only with her abusive father now. “I could tell you I did it. That’s what you wanna hear. I could tell you she did it to herself, but both ways I’d be lying. It was you who did it, Lily. You didn’t mean it, but it was you.”(Kidd 299). Lily shoots her mother and that is how she does, at this time Lily is four and can’t understand what is happening. As said in the quote above Lily doesn’t mean to do it but that moment will forever change her. She may not know it now but this is the biggest turning point in her life.

He didn’t know where Lily was because she ran away. When T-Ray arrives at their house finds Lily and tells her that he will drag her out of the house kicking and screaming if he needs to. Lily refuses and really stands up to T-Ray. She knows what she wants and doesn’t back down from him. This shows the confidence that she has gained and how she feels empowered.
