The movie immediately begins with Lily talking about her mother’s death. T. Ray and Deborah were fighting, and Deborah grabbed the gun. The gun got knocked out of her hand and ended up in Lily’s. Lily tried to help her, but she ended up pulling the trigger, which led to Deborah’s death. This scene is very similar to how the book started. The scene happens again later in the story, when Lily touches Mary’s heart and get’s a flashback.
The three sisters, August, May, and June remained the same in both the movie and book. They all had the same personalities in both versions. June didn’t like Lily and didn’t get along with her until the water fight. May died in the movie, likewise in the book. She also had her mourning wall with the pieces of paper. August was the kind, heartwarming woman in both the movie and the book.
