To me, it felt like Lily thought of Rosaleen as a mother to her. In the book, Rosaleen was beaten and arrested for spitting tobacco on the policemen’s shoes. Despite witnessing this, Lily still fought for her and tried her best to make the men stop. When T. Ray showed up, he pulled Lily away and encouraged the men to continue beating her. When Rosaleen was imprisoned, Lily came up with this plan to ultimately break her out so they could leave T. Ray and the racist and unforgivable place in which she lived. They began to walk to Tiburon, South Carolina where they would be able to register to vote and get away from T. Ray. On the walk there, Lily and Rosaleen had a very deep conversation about where she came from and about her life.
