Despite being confined in their small attic, the Franks, Van Daans, and Dussel all brighten their lives and find hope and enjoyment include doing boisterous activities to distract themselves and showing love and caring towards one another. Anne often plays games on Peter to try to have fun with him, "Peter: You’ve taken them, haven’t you? Anne: I don’t know what you’re talking about...Peter: Wait till I get you! Anne: I’m waiting! (Peter makes a lunge for her. They both fall to the floor. Peter pins her down, wrestling with her to get the shoes)" (521). Anne plays rambunctious games on Peter, such as dressing in his clothing and stealing his shoes, in an effort to have fun and distract herself from the depressing situation the families were in. …show more content…
Though her actions serve to give herself joy, she also wants Peter to have fun. The family celebrates Hanukkah in the Secret Annex and Anne surprises them all with gifts, "Mrs. Frank (sitting down): We are all here, alive. That is present enough. Anne: No, it isn’t. I’ve got something ...Mrs. Frank: What is it? Anne: Presents!" (538). Anne's generous act brightens all of their days and gives all of them enjoyment and excitement in an otherwise dreary situation. Thus, the human spirit wants to delight others and will try to make the best out of a bad situation by showing generosity and love. Sister Aloysius is the principal of the St. Nicholas school. She is stern, suspicious, and cynical, making a point of showing the students no weakness and discouraging signs of weakness in the nuns under her. When she is first introduced, her suspicious nature seems excessive: she suspects a boy who went home with a nosebleed of having intentionally inflicted it himself, and she feels that ballpoint pens, as opposed to fountain pens, offer students the easy way out. Her dour attitude makes her unsympathetic, and audiences are left to wonder whether, as Father Flynn and Sister James speculate at different times, she is suspicious of Father Flynn only because she personally dislikes his compassionate…

Her hate for the Evrémonde became the power that took a turn for the worse, and resulted in a promise to avenge her family, and to end the Evrémonde family tree.…
