I believe both Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court are in the second stage of Sullivan Harry Stack’s interpersonal Development. This stage is called early adolescence. Unlike the preadolescence when children are focused on making few close friend which mostly are the same sex. Early adolescence, however, are more focused on learning to form a good relationship with a person of the opposite gender and developing a sense of identity. Sullivan believes that identity and self-esteem are slowly built through interpersonal relationships with other peers (H.S Sullivan, 1953).
According to Sullivan, these individuals shift their attention from making friends with some of the same sex “ to the need for sexual contact, and the need for closeness …show more content…
When they were meet the last time they weren’t into each other that much even though Lloyd kind of found her attractive. Most boys in his school found Diane Court active but did not have the confidence to ask her. Lloyd Dobler had the confidence to ask her out even when his friends told him that she was out of his league. When one of the guys asked him how he got a date with Diana? He said, “ I called her house and asked her out on a date.” Diane’s needs when she was an infant has also been taken cared of. She was not scared to give Lloyd a chance when he asked her out. Later on, as she got to know him better she started to trust him more and feel comfortable with him.
I also think that both of Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court are almost entering Sullivan Harry Stack’s the third and last stage of interpersonal Development. This stage is called late adolescence. Right at the end of the movie both of them know what they want. They want to be together and near each other. They also trust each other in different ways. Lloyd says to Diana that he will be there for her during their trip to the UK. She is scared of flying and by him saying that she trusts
