Style Analysis On Jack London’s The Sea Wolf
The Author (Jack London) and his times
Born John Griffith Chaney on January 12, 1868, in San Francisco he struggled throughout his childhood; living in poverty because his stepfather could not provide for his family by truck farming. London worked throughout the Oakland waterfront and San Francisco bay while still in grammar school. He signed up to work on the seal-hunting schooner Sophie Sutherland as an able-bodied seaman and boat-puller. While aboard the Sophie Sutherland he was able to visit Japan twice during the Bering Sea Dispute off the coast of Serbia in 1893, where the seal hunting was happening. Soon after he returned to California he went to high school for a year trying hard to pass his college entrance exams. In 1896 got into UC Berkeley where he only stayed for 5 months before leaving and trying to strike it rich at the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896-97 located in the Canadian Yukon. While there London noticed that his teeth were looser and that his gums were bleeding which were common signs of scurvy, a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C, which is indicated by bleeding swollen gums, and healed wounds opening up again. Scurvy was very common for malnourished sailors during the 18th century. Setting The Sea Wolf takes place on The Ghost, a seal hunting schooner during 1839, after the main character Humphrey van Weyden survived the wreckage of the Martinez in the San Francisco Bay.
