The painting being analyzed is called Evening on Karl Johan Street by Edvard Munch. This oil on canvas painting was produced in 1982. What the painting is portraying is a crowd of people walking on a street. The people’s faces seem to look skeleton like much like other works done by Munch such as the most well known painting called The Scream. The sky appears as if the sun has just set and the day has just moved on into the early evening. The background of the painting consists of building that appears to have lights turned on only on the upper level of the building. The background also consists of a tall rock or dirt structure. The faces in the crowd possess uninviting expressions and fearful stares. The figures appear as if they are walking …show more content…
The lines that are depicted clearly in this painting are only on the buildings and appear rough and jagged suggesting turmoil and anxiety. The lines are not only rough and jagged but are broken lines as well which is expressing a fleeting appearance. The lines regarding the figures are not prominent and blurred. The use of colour in this painting adds emphasis on the emotion that is being portrayed. The colours used for the background of the painting are lighter to contrast the darkness of colours used for the figures. The vivid deep colours used expresses the feelings of terror and panic. Munch’s use of subdued tones for the background captures the tranquility of the sun just setting, advancing on to the early night. The spacing of the individuals walking together is not present which creates a tight and claustrophobic sense. Munch has used informal balance for this painting creating a sense that the crowd of individuals outweighs the lonely individual walking in the opposite direction. The proportion in the painting does not create a harmonious sense as not only is the large crowd dominating the solitary individual, but the building and the tall rock or dirt structure is dominating the individual as well making the individual even more isolated and lonesome. The emphasis is most directed on the crowd and our attention is immediately drawn to them. Munch has deliberately avoided formal unity to create a sense of anxiety and

In this exceedingly powerful painting, “Figures in a Landscape” painted in 1972 by Sidney Goodman, a child, woman, and man are in what looks to be a park because of the sandbox and blue and red swing set. In the background the mountains are bright and happy with houses surrounded by many tall green trees. On the right side of the painting is a huge dark gloomy cloud like when a murder is about to occur in a horror movie. The figures look like something is going on in their mind, maybe they are unhappy with each other or something is really upsetting them. When I see this painting I feel as if the figures are in there own world not aware of their surroundings.…

Each layer and highlight raises a question as to what West was trying to portray. In the extreme bottom left corner, the colors are much less focuses, deep browns and shadows reflect an ominous notion and make one wonder, “what is their significance?” But the focus of the painting is three recognizable men in white. In the background of all of these people stand hoards of other people in support of one of the two sides.…

It is a more traditional oil painting, depicting a scene from roughly the 16th or 17th century. Many people are gathered together for an event, most dressed extravagantly in bright blues, greens, yellows, and reds. A few may be seen carrying swords in a scabbard in addition to a couple who seem like guards. At least four white tents are visible in the background, with people moving among them. One tent in particular is flying a flag, containing the colors black, red, and yellow; possibly a fictional flag.…

I really liked all the different brush strokes that formed different images for different people. I was intrigued by the fashion of the painting. On the right, a pair of fashionable tall couple, who both with the black hat, are on a stroll.…

They are too small beyond recognition, so viewers can just make out a figure. Some artworks that impressionists in the 19th century created share some commonalities with this painting. Impressionists depicted the nature with phenomenology excluding political, social, historical thought. They just focused on nature itself, so people are usually cropped or are represented by blurry silhouettes. The big difference from impressionism and the distinct feature of this painting is that what the artist wants to deliver is small philosophy, which is harmony between humanity and nature.…

People are leaning back and forth, dancing, and moving round. These implied diagonal lines give the painting movement. Without the use of diagonal lines the painting would be more stable, which would make the mood less lively and more laidback.
