The surname Ross has four possible origins, though the most possible origin is Scottish. In early Scotland, Ross was a commonly used word used to put a label on the inhabitants of a unit of upper Scotland called Ross-shire, the name meaning “promontory headland” or peninsula. This name later evolved into the Scottish Clan Ross, which were completed with their own coat of arms and motto: “Spem Successus Alit” or “success nourishes hope.” While the clan was eventually torn apart, many married, passing their names down through generations as a popular surname. The family is nontraditional as a result, as Chavchi picks up familial responsibility due to the lack of care and initiative from a drunkard and gambling-addicted father. In addition to an unconventional father figure, Chavchi's many siblings…

Throughout this scene, dramatic irony is displayed due to the fact that the audience knows that Macduff’s family was murdered. At the time, however, Macduff didn't know the truth, which led to him saying that they were doing well. This response is important because Ross played a role in the murder of Macduff’s children, so he was hesitant in telling Macduff the truth. Ross knew the truth, but did nothing to stop it, so he might have felt guilty around Macduff. Additionally, telling one that their family had been killed by murderers is a very difficult thing to do; therefore, Ross would be reluctant in doing so because the news may be too difficult for Macduff to bear.…
