The whole focus of the document “The Real Slumdogs” was a study of THEIR behavior and way of life. Their society was very different from the rest of the world, yet they managed to make a living. Some characters specifically spoke about how their lives were effected because of something like social inequality. One of the characters spoke about how it would be hard for him to get a job in acting and become a movie star of Bollywood because of his background of being from a slum in Dharavi. The outside world views this slum as a very negative and dirty place and even went as far as to name them after dogs. With this negative connotation, being called “slumdogs”, it is hard to find work in the city or make it out of the slum. People who are not from there look down upon the people of this subculture and deny them jobs or opportunities. Another way this could be seen in the film was how the one woman was a third generation rag picker and made enough money for her child to attend school. She was given that opportunity because of her social connections as the daughter of someone who had that job for two generations. Unlike the man who was trying to get a job, she was given the privilege a job because of her connections. More people in the film however struggled with social inequality because they were from the slums. The title “slumdogs” did not help them find work anywhere else and only made it more difficult to accomplish their dream and dig their way out of poverty. This social condition is the cause of why many people had the privileges and jobs that they had. Although most people try to be fair, social inequality was extremely present in this film as well as other places all over the world.
