Three primary characteristics concerning human behavior as defined in The Science of Personality include, people are social animals, and they have always lived in groups; groups have a hierarchal structure of power, and people need to have a system of meaning such as religion or science. Additionally, people operate by three central motives:
1. People have to get along with others, bond with other people and experience warmth and empathy.
2. To be successful in groups, individuals compete with other personalities in the groups which ignite conflict between the aspect of getting along and getting ahead.
3. People need meaning in their lives. Individuals have a need for structure and order.
