Personal Statement: My Role As An Educator

Improved Essays
It is another August. The teachers enter the school for the academic year, the main hallway, as well as the walkways are buzzing with excitement and mixed emotions. The faculty meeting begins at 8:30. The returning faculty are engaged in conversations of last year’s accomplishments and setbacks. A first-year teacher enters timidly smiling and finds a seat in the crowded library. As the conversation continues she sits nervously listening to the exchange amongst her new colleagues. The conversation shifts to an annoyed teacher who begins to voice her negative opinion of the administrators, the school’s appearance, the parents, and the students. The unseasoned teacher’ smile begins to fade as she continues to listen. The meeting begins; she sits …show more content…
However, it is my obligation to raise the consciousness level of these students. It is my charge not just to educate them on sentence structure or how shadows are made, or the order of planets in our solar system. Educators are in good positions to assist students with developing their personal qualities, helping them with self-awareness and building personal values. Many schools have fraternities and sororities to come in and mentor students. That is all well and good, but I would like to see teachers build a more positive relationship with students. During my undergraduate studies, some were asked about their pledging preference. The response, none, just Me Phi Me. These individuals thought by becoming a member of a group their sense of individuality would be altered. This school year I would organize a Me Phi Me Mentor program. The purpose of this program would be for teachers to mentor students who lack motivation and have a low self- esteem. Shakespeare wrote to thy own self be true. An individual must have self-awareness, a strong value system, and strong personal qualities before contributing positively to a group, much less to a community. The teachers’ job is to help the student build personal character and values. Respect for self can help one have respect for others. If respect is not taught or if you are not sure of who you are …show more content…
She entered my class early Monday morning with tears in her eyes. I tried desperately to console her before the students arrived to school. The young teacher was upset by the lack of respect the students had for her in her class. She tried to talk in between sobs about the lack of focus the students had on the lesson. The students would engage in conversations which later would become abusive bickering and then a fight. It wasn’t just an occasional fight. It was a constant battle keeping control in class. Unfortunately, this was the young teacher who heard the negative conversation during the pre-planning meeting, but failed to prepare herself to handle similar situations, if they were to happen in her class. I tell new teachers you can hear what goes on and do nothing to stop it, or become proactive and make a difference. Change is not the forbidden fruit but the seed that must be planted to alter an outcome. Teachers have he ability to change lives.
Teacher leaders can encourage social change by becoming more active in the lives of individuals they meet on a daily basis. Besides the family and the church, educators are on the forefront for changing and altering lives of students and, as well as, novice teachers. We can assist in changing the mindset of individuals, so that they can function more effectively and humanely in their

Rose D’Alessio: A Teacher Leader at Montevallo High To be a leader, a teacher must think as leaders do. Rather than asking , “What am I going to do?” leaders ask, “What is it I am trying to get others to do, and what reasons might they have for doing those things?” (Schlechty, 2002). This thinking model describes Montevallo High School’s October Teacher-of-the-Month, Rose D’Alessio.…

PART A: I agree with Carol Tomlinson’s statement about curriculum being the ultimate identifier of potential. Potential is having or showing capacity to become or develop into something in the future. School curriculum is defined as the course of study observed by the school. I do believe that the curriculum has to reflect the student’s needs to be the ultimate identifier of potential. We know that all students learn differently.…

Most people imagine a teacher as someone who is in their late 30’s or older teaching in a classroom. Many lessons are taught in the classroom, but many more lessons are taught outside of the classroom. My cousin Keisha and her daughter, KaLeiah, have been the greatest teachers I ever have had in my life. KaLeiah is a three-year old, a tall, lean, energetic little girl with beautiful light brown skin, just like her mother. She has dark black afro hair, and mix of shades of brown eyes, which has filled me with the will to open my heart and mind to the world.…

I walk into the red brick building of Sacajawea Middle School. I heave the door open and set foot into the eventful day coming. The commons are buzzing as usual like bees frantically trying to collect their honey. The lockers slamming shut, the laughing, footsteps, and hushed whispers morph into a gentle murmur encasing me. I walk up to my friends Jayden and Rachel, who are laughing at one of the many puns that flutter through the halls.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

They have a vast impact on their student’s lives, but one thing no one can ever really grasp is the impact students have on teachers. Teachers are gifts from God. I am blown away at the fact that I could have this opportunity to experience this feeling. Walking into that building—as I had a thousand times before—with my head held high, I tried to remember everything I had been taught. Bits and pieces seemed to be slipping through my mind—like grains of sand that escape from someone’s fingers.…

Personal Statement Jonathan Johnson, Malaysia, English Teaching Assistantship Walking past the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue still feels surreal. I vividly remember sitting in my Grammy’s trailer watching Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, inspired by his journey and message of hope. His humble beginnings—being raised by a single, hardworking mother and grandparents facing financial pressures—partially parallel my story and continue to inspire my work as a community organizer, public opinion researcher, and educator. Unlike the rest of my family, I fortunately attended college, choosing the internationally diverse University of Rochester.…

The Importance of Teachers as Leaders In today’s world, there is an ever-present need for restructuring our public school systems, particularly regarding leadership in our schools. “Teacher Leaders” is a term that is becoming more used in today’s educational setting. Teacher leaders, or leaders as teachers, are teachers “who aspire to stretch beyond their classrooms to engage in leadership roles that take many shapes and forms, both informal and formal” (Education Commission of the State, 2010, p.1). This is not a new concept but one that is being tweaked.…
