Know Your School Night Experience Essay

Improved Essays
The Know Your School Night that I attended was at Forest Grove Middle School on September 20, 2016. We started the night by congregating in the auditorium and listening to the principle address the crowd. He started with a by welcoming the parents and introducing all eight interpreters who spoke languages like Arabic, Portuguese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish and an ASL interpreter. After he introduced the interpreters, he addressed a few things that the school prides themselves on. His biggest point was about safety. He heavily stressed how this school is one of the safest places for the parent’s children and how the administrators don’t sit behind their desks the entire day; they patrol the halls and help the students. For me, this was very …show more content…
Johnson’s science class. When I first entered the room, I was still a little focused on what I had just seen in Ms. Steven’s English class. I was worried about the class size and teacher to student ratios. When Mrs. Johnson started talking about her relationship with students, I was kind of encouraged because this is something that I had not seen in the previous classroom that I was in, but when I look back on my experience in Mrs. Johnson’s classroom, I am very discouraged by what she had to say. When she first started talking, I agreed with the points she was making. She talked a fair amount about how Know Your School Night was not as accessible to families who work later shifts or lack transportation, but after that the conversation got rocky. She started explaining how all of her honors students parents had shown up to the nights events but the parents of her ELL students did not. She went on to explain that the parents may not show up because of work or because they do not care about their child’s education. She tried to justify this by explain that the parents are happy with the mediocre jobs they have now and are surviving from that and they don’t see the importance of educating their child if they can also get by with the same jobs. This then caused her to bring up the point that she is like a mother to all of her students. When I look back, I think she really lost my confidence when she said that she deals with the kids …show more content…
I think my interaction with Mrs. Johnson kind of skewed my perception of this night, but I tried my best to look at my experience without that interaction. I liked how when you walked into the school you were greeted by the bulletin board with the honor roll students, the athletic trophies and then the library and auditorium were right there. To me this showed the importance of togetherness within the school. I liked that they took the time to honor different things that their students excel in. The inclusion of parents was also a big thing for me. It seemed like the teachers wanted to make sure parents are involved in their child’s education because both classrooms I was in, the teachers said feel free to reach out if you ever need to have a one on one conference about your child. The final thing that I really appreciated about the school was how the importance of safety was stressed. Nowadays, that is something that is at the forefront of parent’s minds when they leave their child at school. The principal addressing a topic like that right of the bat I think reassured some parents about the topic of safety. Overall, this seemed like a very functional school that honors the parents, teachers and

Education in schools has long been a heated topic, especially in regards to what its purpose is. On one hand, some, such as the ACSD Committee, argue that education’s purpose is “to provide for the fullest possible development of each learner for living morally, creatively, and productively in a democratic society.” However, others identify a far more critical purpose of education, such as that of Jean Anyon. Anyon theorizes in her article “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” that the function of our educational systems is to uphold the structure of today’s society that keeps the working class majority oppressed and its top 1% superior to the working class through the way the curriculum is taught. As someone who has been in school…

My time at Barnegat High School has helped me to become who I am today and will most defiantly impact what I will do in the future. The teachers and my peers have all been an influence on my life and during the four years that I spent at the school, I have done some things for the school and the community as a way to thank them for giving me the opportunities that they have. It was they who pushed me to keep trying and striding to succeed and without them, I would not have accomplished what I have today. One of the things that I am most proud of doing is helping to bring new clubs and activities to Barnegat High School. This year, with the help of other students and advisors, a new club made it into the ranks of the diverse sea of clubs and groups that already exist.…

As I entered into Mrs. Cindy Rodgers classroom, I felt the fear come back, I do not think I can work with students of this age. 3rd-grade students, I felt lost and out of place. 22 students, around 9 years of age, just don’t seem to be my forte. But on the other note, this class definitely surprised me. With 14 girls and only 8 boys, the class was sat up on a totally different way than I have ever seen a class.…

Reflection for Week Eleven During week eleven I had the opportunity to sit in on parent teacher conferences on Tuesday and Thursday. Although the days were very long since we were at school until 6:30pm each night, I gain knew insight from the teacher’s perspective. I learned that it is best to sit beside the parents instead of sitting in the “teacher’s chair” so that parents do not feel intimidated as you share information about their students. You want to make the parents feel comfortable as they listening to the teacher give an overview of their students’ progress, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. You also want the parents to feel comfortable sharing information that could help their student in the classroom during the meeting regardless…

Observations: Students were allowed to wear a hat to class if they had paid a dollar. Usually this is not allowed in class. They seemed pretty excited over allowed to wear a hat in the classroom. When the students finally settled in to the classroom, Mrs. Geisheimer gave the students a Do Now. The way she described the assignment was confusing because she told the students to do the right side of the page, but when showing the class the paper, she was pointing to the left side of the page.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

I was assigned to Ms. Pickholtz’s 1st grade class. During this time, I felt I was able to confidently encounter, converse, and assist the children with varying subject matters. Additionally, my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Jessica Diaz, is still extremely helpful and even allows me to teach the students in small-groups. Phi Delta Kappan, 86, 649-651 Summary Creating a community structure is not enough to change a school’s current culture, although professional learning communities, or PLCs have great potential for bringing about advances in teaching and learning. In order for PLCs to be effective, district and school leaders must provide structures, strategies and support to help teachers develop their teaching skills. Schools in both Cincinnati and Philadelphia who had established PLCs with small teams of teachers were observed by the authors.…
