In Martha Salinas,’ “The scholarship Jacket,’’ we are introduced to Martha, She is in 8th grade with straight A’s. She is a mexican 14 year old. Her father is a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed eights children. So when she was six years old she was given to her grandparents. In May, close to graduation, she was almost back to her classroom door when she heard voices raised in anger as if in some sort of argument. She didn't mean to eavesdrop. She didn't know what to do. She recognized the voices: Mr. Schmidt, her history teacher, and Mr. Boone, her math teacher. They seemed to be arguing about Martha. Her looked uncomfortable and unhappy. I decided she wasn't going to make it any easier for him so Martha looked him straight in the eyes. He looked away and fidgeted with the paper on his desk. ¨Martha,¨ he said. ¨there been a change in policy this year regarding the Scholarship jacket. As you know, it has always been free.¨ He cleared his throat and continued. ¨ THis year the board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won't cover the complete cost of the jacket.¨She stared at him in shock, and a small sound of dismay escaped my throat. Standing with all the dignity I could muster, Martha said, ¨ I'll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.¨ I cried on the walk home from the bus stop. The dirt road was a quarter mile from the highway, so by the time I got home, my eyes were red and puffy. Martha asked,” grandpa if she can have $15 for a scholarship jacket.” Grandpa said,” No.” Martha ran to her room and cried to her pillow. The next day, Martha got called to the principal office and told him that she can’t pay for the scholarship jacket . Matha said,” Give the jacket to joann.
