If someone was ridiculed about a sin what would everyone’s reactions be? The Scarlett Letter” was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the 1840’s. It was written in Salem and Concord Massachusetts. The setting of this story is in Boston in the middle 17th century. It is full of sin, lies, and suspense. Throughout the novel, Hawthorne uses the symbols of light and dark to depict good and evil among the characters Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth.
Hester Prynne is a young woman that has a kind nature which makes her a light character, but she is living with a dark immense sin. “Those who had before known her, and had expected to behold her dimmed and obscured by a disastrous cloud, were astonished, and even startled, to perceive how her beauty shone out, and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy in which she was enveloped” (Hawthorne 50-51). Hester Prynne was judged by everyone because she committed adultery since she was lonely. People were very judgmental of her daughter Pearl because they thought she was an imp. That did not change the love Hester had for Pearl due to Pearl being her daughter.
