The Scarlet Letter is a symbol of a sin, that both Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmesdale committed. This sin is adultery. Hester Prynne was punished for her sin, but never told anyone who the other person was. She kept it a secret for a very long time. Hester Prynne had her baby, Pearl, and still never said who was the other parent was. Hester has spent time in jail, she has been publicly embarrassed, and she wears the scarlet letter on her chest everyday for everyone to see it. Hester deals with it very well. Reverend Dimmesdale on the other hand does not. Hester Prynne had a husband and that is why she got into trouble. They liked him for that, they felt that he could feel the same pain they did. The only people that knew of the sin were Hester Prynne, Reverend Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth. One day Hester brought Pearl with her and they went into the woods. Usually you don’t go in the woods unless your going to meet the Black Man. The Black Man is the devil. It is said that he carries around a big heavy book and he meets people, they write their name in the book with their blood and that he sets a mark on their bosom so people know that they have met with him. Hesters and Dimmesdale's is the scarlet letter. When Pearl and Hester were in the woods Pearl said to her mother that the sun does not like her. Because the sun never shined upon her, “ Mother, the sunshine does not love you” (Hawthorne 202). That the sun was on Pearl, but never her mother. Eventually Pearl was sent to go and play so Hester could do what she needed to do. After sitting there for awhile she hears Dimmesdale walk by, she wanted to talk to him. She saw how rough, haggard, feeble he looked, “He looked haggard and feeble, and betrayed a nerveless despondency in his air,” (Hawthorne 207). He was really suffering, he has been keeping it in for so long it was really taking a toll on him. He was keeping it in when everyone found out about Hester, Hester didn’t suffer in silence like Dimmesdale is. She was publicly embarrassed, but she was never as rough as Dimmesdale was. Hester and Dimmesdale feel the same way about each other, they care for each other and want to be together, but in their town that’ll be difficult, than they started to not really care what the townspeople thought and they just wanted to be happy in Hesters Defiance she agrees, that they were only thinking of themselves but when they meet up again it was different (Nina Baym).
