Negative tones are used mostly with the character by the name of Roger Chillingworth. Being that Chillingworth Hester 's long-lost husband whom vows for revenge on the father of Pearl (the man who has committed adultery with his wife); Naturally, negative tones will be presented throughout the text. Constantly in a rush to do bad acts until “there was no more devil’s work left for him to do” (Hawthorne 177). The thirst of vengeance made the man mentally mad which led to his death toward the closing of the story. However, “this unhappy man had made the very principle of his life to consist in the pursuit and systematic exercise revenge; and when, by its completest triumph consummation that evil principle was left with no further material to support it” ( Hawthorne 177). The cold bitter wrath Roger experiences shows this ‘anger’ and ‘bitter’ tone. This negative tone helps back up the purpose of the novel because it shows the hypocrisy of the Puritan lifestyle. Puritans are said to be all holy, yet the moral beliefs and right mind are not shown with Chillingworth. The action of him being evil supports how opposite and sinful people can be in that time. That purpose to expose hypocrisy in the Puritans way of life and in doing so, show that no one is perfect and everyone sins. Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, illustrates tone through characters well in order to further support his purpose. With Hester, Hawthorne depicts her as a strong, compassionate, independent woman with the right morals to set her forth in life. Hester’s ideals supported the understanding thought that sin will happen, but that does not mean one can create a better life. With Chillingworth, Hawthorne depicts him as an evil, wicked, malignant being which shows the audience how negative the Puritan society can be and shows how much revenge/sin can reshape a man’s life. Finally with Pearl; Hawthorne depicts her as an innocent, dramatic, neutral character who develops over the book in order to represent the concept of growth and transformation with people as a whole. You are trapped in an overwhelming unpoppable bubble surrounded by others who point, poke and mock you for past mistakes.
