Pride goes before a fall. It was Brother's pride that brought his downfall in "The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. Brother had a disabled brother named Doodle. When Doodle was 5, Brother tried to teach him how to walk, swim, and other perform other physical tasks to avoid the shame of having a disabled brother. During one of their lessons there was a storm and Brother ran, leaving his younger brother behind. When Brother looks for his brother later, Doodle was found dead. Hurst uses this incident in his short story to teach the lesson that acts done out of pride will have results you regret.
