“The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is about a boy and his crippled brother, Doodle. Doodle wasn’t able to walk but his brother was determined to teach him everything. The narrator (brother) pushed Doodle to hard, causing him die. Through the use of mood, conflict, and climax the author conveys the theme of having pride for your brother. The author uses mood to show you what is going to happen. For example, the narrator started the story with "The flower garden was strained with rotting brown magnolia petals and ironweeds grew rank.” (Page 1) This quote shows that right away you know that it is fall and people won't be as excited like they would be in the summer.
