The Scarlet Ibis Doodle Character Analysis

In the story The Scarlet Ibis there is a choice made by Doodle to not to give up and the immortal weather during a Doodles death. The narrator of the story wanted a normal and healthy brother, but he did not get the brother he wanted, he got Doodle. At first it is hard for the narrator to accept Doodle as a brother because Doodle is disabled. He was born with a normal head and a tiny red and shriveled body. A strain could kill him. The doctor said that Doodle should not get too excited, too hot, too cold, or too tired. He should always be treated gently with care. Then later on throughout the story the narrator starts to like Doodle to the point he is proud that Doodle was his brother. One day narrator dragged Doodled across the cotton field to Old Woman Swamp and set Doodle on the grass beside a tall pine . Doodle loved it so both of them went to Old Woman Swamp every day. When doodle was five years old the narrator was embarrassed about having a brother that could not walk; so the narrator sets a mission to teach Doodle to walk at Old Woman Swamp. They had been going to Old Woman Swamp day after day. The narrator picking up Doodle every time he fell. “ Every day that summer we went to the pine beside the stream of Old Woman Swamp, and I put him on his feet at least a hundred times each afternoon. Occasionally I too became discouraged because it didn’t seem as if he was trying, and I would say, “Doodle, don’t you want to learn to walk?” He’d nod his head, and I’d say, “Well if you don’t keep trying, you’ll never learn…” Finally one day. After many weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds” (Hurst). Doodle was told he would never be able to walk. That he would have to be carried around everywhere. If he would have fought and kept on trying he would have never learned to walk and never would have discovered other abilities, such as running and swimming. The portrayal makes the audience wanting to cheer for Doodle because Doodle kept on trying and the audience was basically cheering him on to keep on trying and not to give up. This makes people have hope that miracles can happen so they should never give up. This was a miracle to Doodle because he was never going to be able to walk, it felt hopeless at the beginning. Then later on this turning into something greater than expected. This choice is very important for Doodle because he is considered to be just a disabled little boy not capable of much. If a person is willing to try and not to give up they will succeed it is their choice if they want to keep on going. Choice is often difficult, like choice immortality can show up in the wrong times. In the Scarlet Ibis, weather is shown as immortal at the end of the short story. Doodle and the narrator went to the Horsehead Landing.
