“The Scarlet Ibis” is a short story by James Hurst. This story takes place during WWI in the southern part of the U.S. “The Scarlet Ibis” is a story about Brother and his younger brother Doodle.The fact that, Doodle was born fragile and disabled made him a small burden for his family . Doodle was said to live an few years because of his fragile body and then he would die,but he didn’t. Brother helps Doodle throughout the story teaching him how to walk etc. Doodle has a diverse personality with many strengths and weaknesses. Doodle shows his dedication to his brother throughout the story. For example, Doodle shows his dedication when he was training with Brother. Doodles creative imagination was shown when he would tell crazy lies about Peter and his pet peacock. When Doodle and Brother would talk about what they would do when they grew up it made brother think about how beautiful it would be. All doodle wanted to do was spend time with Brother which made him use his creative personality to create his future for himself. Doodle’s compassion and personality caused him to never want to be be alone in life. Doodle at the beginning of the story didn’t want brother to leave him when he was being forced to touch his coffin. Furthermore, Doodle had cried the words”Don’t leave me, Brother.” (Page 4) when Brother said he was going to leave Doodle alone in the barn loft. Doodle showed compassion for the Scarlet Ibis that had died in a storm, by burying it. With this in mind, at the end of the story Doodle was left alone by Brother, who had left in anger resulting in Doodle’s death. The story ends in tragedy and doesn’t tell how Doodle has died. Doodle had many hardships, and setbacks throughout the story. However, Doodle did live a very short prosperous life with his family.
