Both the sniper and the big brother in both stories, learn a lesson, to me carefully. Not to think of the first option and go with it. You have to think of other ways, in any solution. Both were thinking of themselves. The big brother thought if he had a brother who could walk, he wouldn’t be as embarrassed, then he kept on making goals one after the other, not giving his little brother enough time to catch up with him. He wanted to reach the goals of himself, only thinking of himself. The sniper was in a dangerous situation, he had to get out of shooting people, although he didn’t think of another way out. His goal was to reach a way out. But he ended up finishing his own brother’s life, because he was so used to killing he didn’t give it a second

One conflict that was resolved and lead to a theme in “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty would be when the republican soldier was shot by the enemy in the forearm but thought of a plan and killed the other soldier because he’s taught to not let his emotions get in the way of his job. It was unfair that he was put to a disadvantage, but he had to deal with it in order to kill the other soldier, who was firing at him, and in order to survive. Being shot is a major conflict in “The Sniper”, not only because it put him to a disadvantage, but also because his instincts were really put to the test. As a result of being shot in the forearm, the soldier was short one arm, therefore left with his revolver and his quick thinking mind. Consequently he thought…

War stories are gruesome. They capture the reality of war--death, grief, and pain. “The Sniper” and “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” (by Liam O’Flaherty and Tim O’Brien respectively) are both shining examples of this; unpacking the glorification of victory to reveal how humans are dehumanized and trained to kill other people. Their differences outline a common theme: how war dehumanizes people from killing and guilt, and how that all builds into a catastrophe later on in life.…
