The Scariest Moment Is Always Just Before You Start

“The scariest moment is always just before you start,” a quote by Steven King, the colossal American author, is exactly how I felt starting this essay. As I read through The Little, Brown Handbook I became very apprehensive because I realized this was no longer a high-school class to get an easy break with. Instead, this was a class that expected me to remember what a comma splice was, a class that asked for a pronounced devotion to the craft of writing that has been pushed aside by students, including myself, for far too long. I am well prepared for this class not because I was a star English student, but because I am ready to accept a more strenuous challenge out of an English class, I am taking extra time to review and revise things that …show more content…
I realize I have toiled with certain concepts in the past, but I believe this fire underneath me is what is going to help me flourish this year. I imagine the essay I am writing this very moment is not all the marvelous, but I hope it can show my teacher, Mrs. Cantrell, that I am not here to play the fool. I look forward to tasks that cause sweat because I am so intent on making it impeccable or for assignments that ask me to study to a point in which I actually need a break. I am here to learn the next big step in my English career. This class will not temporarily aid me in high-school, it will support me the rest of my life. For instance, I am presently writing a one-act play that I know will be improved upon after taking this class. “The scariest moment is always just before you start.” This quote from Steven King is true, but in another way it is not. The most appealing moment is always just before you start, because no matter if I get an A or an F, I am learning the whole way. I am prepared for this class because I am ripe for a challenge, I am ready to review old concepts on my own, and I am keen to learn regardless how laborious it may be and that is what I believe makes a professional college student, I will do my finest for this

This letter is being written to you, to let you know my thoughts about how much this class has enabled me to grow as a writer and student. As a writer I have many new acquired strengths. Before this class, I wrote very generic five paragraph essays that let the reader know, that the author of a certain piece of work was a good writer and captivated the audience. Now I am able to state the authors’ purpose and the rhetoric terms that he or she uses to get their purpose across to their audiences.…

In this essay I will be analyzing my own writing based on our responses throughout the year so far. One of the stories we read in English Comp was “Learning to Read” by Malcolm X. In this story, Malcolm X talks about his past life and his journey to independently learning how to read. Malcolm X states that college has too many distractions to learn effectively. I responded, “College is a place to help you realize and then focus on what you want to do professionally. I am in college to earn my Associates of Applied Science degree.…

There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing.
