As the primaries were happening, the FBI was investigating Hillary Clinton. In July 2015, The FBI announced they would not recommend criminal charges, despite FBI director James Comey stating that “there is evidence that they [Secretary Clinton and her colleagues] were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.” Clearly, while no criminal charges were pursued, Hillary Clinton was at fault for sending classified emails on a personal email server. This was another blemish on Hillary Clinton’s already dwindling public image. However, this was not the end of the FBI’s involvement in Hillary Clinton’s email server. A week and a half before the election, James Comey sent a letter to Congress stating the FBI was reopening the investigation because new emails were discovered during an investigation of Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin. This bombshell announcement absolutely devastated the Clinton campaign mercilessly destroying their momentum. This new development intensified media coverage of Hillary Clinton’s scandalous past and unfavorably tilted the election towards her opponent. This is evident by Hillary Clinton stating days after she lost the election that “our analysis is that Comey raising doubts that were groundless, baseless, proven to be, stopped our momentum.” Most importantly, the scandals of Hillary Clinton being covered ceaselessly by the media led to voters deciding that Hillary Clinton was corrupt, dishonest, and untrustworthy, therefore, not deserving of their
