The movie “The Savages” chronicles the life of a brother-sister duo who all of a sudden are responsible for taking care of their estranged for 20 years father who is also mentally ill. This film shows an extreme case where families are required to take care of members with a strained relationship. In countries like China, there are laws mandating families to take care of their members except in circumstances like that mentioned in “The Savages.” But healthcare is very expensive and the cost is only increasing. So until the government decides to lower the cost or stabilize the costs, they need to fund it.

Both my parents, upon arrival to America, worked until they were stable enough to bring their surviving parents, who then lived with us until they died. To send your parent to a home or abandon them is neglect and disrespect no matter what your relationship with them is like. If they raised you, it is your responsibility to take care of them in the final days. Growing up with a medical background, I understand what steps are necessary to take to provide healthcare for my ailing parent. My sister and I could alter our schedules to become paid caregivers for our parents. We would lose sleep but shows respect for our parents. Then we could work and take a 1 year nursing program to become an LPN and have the government pay us more money to take care of our parents.
