Title: The Sane V.S. Insane
In a society where “black is white”, “war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength”, and “two plus two makes five”; the insane are sane and overruling the society. Winston’s Sanity is put to the test almost every day; by rebelling, Winston is grasping and trying to reach out for his humanity. The want to win over the totalitarianism society, to grasp the past, and to have individual feelings are factors that help Winston want to hold onto his humanity. Winston’s desperation to hold onto his humanity is the element that drives this piece of literature. When people in the society say things like O’Brien when he say’s “If you are human, you’re the only man standing” Orwell (pg. 278), it’s kind of hard to hold onto what little bits of humanity the society hasn’t destroyed.
Totalitarian; when heard people assume the absolute worst and they should, but in 1984 totalitarianism is taken to a whole new level of insane, literally. To the average person in today’s society this society is considered insane, but to them they are 100% logically sane. O’Brien a leader of the party explains that “Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.” Orwell (pg. 263). This society has brainwashed everyone into believing…
