Asgard is home to many important figures in the belief. These figures include Odin, Thor, and Loki who are all used as characters in The Sandman. Although Asgard is not a primary subject in the story, it is still an an important piece to the story's progression. Asgard is one of the planes of existence that wants to obtain the keys to Hell. In addition, even though Asgard is not a primary subject it is still a secondary subject in the story. Part of this secondary subject involves Loki’s imprisonment in the cavern beneath the world while waiting for Ragnarok: «Ragnarok is usually translated “the Twilight of the Gods,”». In the Norse mythology Ragnarök is a series of future event which lead to the end of the world. Loki is kept in the cavern, bound to a stone beneath a snake that drips venom onto him unless the woman that is with him named Sigyn holds a bowl above his head to catch the venom. Loki was imprisoned here so he could not cause any problems or pose any threat. In Episode 3, Odin, who is said to be the All-father of the gods, comes to Loki’s prison and unties him from the stone. Even though he is released from his prison, this is only a temporary release so he can help Odin obtain the key to Hell.
